Client: Wates Construction Ltd

Structural Engineer: Toureen Group Ltd

Project Value: 1.1 Million

Contract Value: 1.1 Million

Sector: Demolition

Date of Completion: April 2020

As part of the wider Toureen Group, Tilley and Barrett provided the demolition services. This consisted of the complete demolition of the former Trafalgar Public House, Curzon Cinema, Habitat Store and Friese Green Building.

The complicated deconstruction and demolition programme posed many challenges, utilising many of the Toureen Group’s wider expertise and divisions, including temporary works design, heavy lifting planning strategies, complex deconstruction design and methodologies, remediation, environmental studies, and asbestos removal. The latter of which were found to have high levels of contamination within the structure as work progressed. This was negated by forward planning and reactive measures to maintain the tight programme.

The final part of the demolition was met with a significant milestone, the lifting of the main rood truss, which weighed an impressive 54 tons. This was lifted in sequence with the remaining roof sections, making way for the final demolition of the building with a combination of a high reach excavator and a range of other supporting machines from Toureen’s in house machinery plant.

The work commenced in April 2018 and construction is due to be completed in 2022, with internal fit-out scheduled for completion in 2021. The contract was noted as Wates Construction Ltd highest profile contract with the Tilley and Barrett Site Supervisor being awarded the Wates Construction Ltd Demolition Supervisor of the year, a fitting end to Tilley and Barrett’s demolition phase on an extremely challenging project.
